About Christina Keenan, LPC, PMH-C
I am an outpatient Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia. I received formal training and certification in Perinatal Mental Health from Postpartum Support International. I am also formally trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS Level 1), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT-informed). I am able to meet with clients via telehealth or at my office in Old Town Alexandria. In addition to my private practice, I am privileged to support new moms as a support group facilitator with Parent and Childhood Education (PACE)
If you are struggling with a perinatal mental health issue or disorder, you are not alone and you are not damaged. I partner with my clients to help them understand and process the wide variety of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that can arise before, during, after a baby joins the family, to include navigating the tremendous challenges that come with perinatal loss and fertility challenges. I want my clients to have a safe space to honestly share what they are experiencing and to feel authentically seen and heard in those experiences. I utilize IFS, EMDR, DBT, and other therapeutic modalities to help clients develop insight and work towards implementing healthy changes in their thought processes, behaviors, and relationships. I also try to help clients foster resilience by accessing their strengths and protective factors, to include developing support networks and tapping into community-based and online resources. I strive to embody cultural humility and a passion for social justice in my work - it takes a village, and everyone's village will look and feel different. There is no "right" way to bring a baby into this world and no "right" way to raise a child. Unfortunately, many systems in our country are vastly inequitable when it comes to supporting birthing people and partners from marginalized communities.
Taking steps to engage or re-engage in therapy takes courage. It is not easy to practice vulnerability and to open oneself up to painful thoughts, feelings, and experiences, especially while hoping, planning, or caring for a baby. I applaud you for choosing to prioritize your mental health - you deserve to feel well! Therapy is not a "magic cure," but it can help us develop both valuable insights and knowledge of helpful concepts and skills, such that we can start to make sustainable, positive changes. I look forward to walking with you for this part of your journey.
