About Rayna D. Markin, PhD
Rayna D. Markin, PhD, received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park and is currently an Associate Professor in counseling at Villanova University and a licensed psychologist with a private practice. Dr. Markin is licensed in Maryland and Pennsylvania and is additionally a PSYPACT provider, offering teletherapy services to patients in any PSYPACT participating state.
She has extensive clinical experience providing both individual and couples therapy to patients affected by many forms of reproductive trauma, particularly pregnancy loss and infertility. Based on clinical experience and research, Dr. Markin has developed an attachment-based, experiential, and trauma-informed approach to treating the psychological effects of pregnancy loss, as demonstrated in the new American Psychological Association (APA) Therapy Demonstration Video titled, Pregnancy Loss.
Her approach to psychotherapy is primarily relational, applying over 50 years of research on the therapist-client relationship and therapy outcome to psychotherapy for pregnancy loss and other adverse reproductive events. She is the author of the new book, Psychotherapy for Pregnancy Loss: Applying Relationship Science to Clinical Practice, which describes how a supportive and empathic therapist-client relationship can help clients affected by pregnancy loss and fertility struggles to process and grow from the grief and trauma associated with these events and to restore healthy self-esteem and identify that are often damaged by these experiences.
Dr. Markin is also an Associate Professor in Counseling at Villanova University with an active program of research on the therapist-client relationship in psychotherapy for pregnancy loss and has authored over 40 published peer-reviewed journal articles, two classic books in the field, and several book chapters on the psychotherapy relationship and psychotherapy for pregnancy loss, recurrent pregnancy loss, pregnancies after loss, fetal terminations due to a genetic anomaly, and child birth trauma. She is associate editor of the APA journal Psychotherapy: Theory, Research, Practice, and Training, and was guest editor for the special section, Psychotherapy for Pregnancy Loss.
Dr. Markin is frequently interviewed in the media on topics related to pregnancy loss and infertility. She travels nationally and internationally, presenting on how psychotherapy can help affected patients heal the many deep wounds inflicted by experiences with pregnancy loss and related reproductive traumas. She is frequently quoted in popular mediate outlets such as, The APA Monitor, The Today Show, and The New York Times, on issues related to psychotherapy for pregnancy loss and infertility. Dr. Markin offers individual and couples psychotherapy, counseling, fertility consultations, and professional supervision and consultation as well as training seminars for other professionals.
